Why do we need Aromatherapy? - by Amit Sarda, MD, Soulflower

Home matters: Why do we need Aromatherapy?

We are living life in a fast lane and stress is the byproduct of this lifestyle. As we continue to let our sedentary, tensed life dominate our existence, less is done in the space of wellness. Even as the grossly undervalued Indian wellness industry generates massive returns, the average Indian comes home and crashes to their bed with little or no energy left to relax and rejuvenate. Aromatherapy then becomes by far the best solution to our prevailing problem of stress.

Aromatherapy is about using essential oils for therapeutic, cosmetic and aromatic benefit where natural oils are extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots and other parts of plants to improve our psychological and physical well-being. It’s about the wellness of our mind, body, and soul. It’s about being happy. Are we happy? We are too busy to evaluate our life and our health-related decisions, living the life designed for us. We are stuck in a routine, and we are forever out of time without taking care of ourselves.

The foundation of Aromatherapy dates back to thousands of years where essential oils were used for the well being of our psychological and physical needs. It’s only in the late 20th century and into the 21st century that we have seen a revival of renewed interest in utilizing natural organic products for our benefits.

The air that we breathe today is toxic, which wasn’t the case a few years back. Ask your elders and they will agree pollution has increased at an alarming rate. This year Delhi suffered from terrible smog, which was worst till date.  According to Air Quality Index rating, it had 16 times the level considered safe by the Indian government. When it comes to pollution other metropolitan cities are not safe either. Imagine traveling for work in the terribly polluted area. Breathing toxic air can not only damage your lungs but also make you susceptible to depression. It then becomes important to use air purifiers which will become a necessity, and it already has become in some parts of our country. Using recommended essential oils can reduce the damage caused by the toxic polluted air in your body as the practice of aromatherapy is to create a stress-free environment of harmony and balance.

Aromatherapy has several advantages which include reducing anxiety, easing depression, boosting energy levels, improving healing process, eliminating headaches, improving cognitive performance, inducing sleep, strengthening the immune system, reducing pain, improving digestion, and increasing circulation.

For example Soulflower Jasmine has a relaxing aroma which proves to be calming and soothing nerves after a stressful day of work. Soulflower Ylang Ylang Essential Oil reduces anger, tension & nervousness and aids insomnia. It’s considered great for hair growth. Soulflower Lavender reduces anxiety and depression while also influences our emotional response and memories. These are just a few examples of the benefits aromatherapy provides which can improve the way you live.

Some tips on living the good life.
1.    You can live a life fueled by happiness by spending valuable time with your supportive friends and family. Share experiences together, and create memories with them which you can go back and be nostalgic about.
2.    Lead a simple healthy life by following a nutritious diet coupled with exercise. A healthy mind and body is a happy mind and body.
3.    You can stop worrying about what you cannot control. It’s wise to only worry only about what you can control where your efforts can be translated into positive results.
4.    Avoid chemical products & processed foods.

5.    Live passionately. You get one life, use it wisely. Do it with passion or don’t do it.
