“GERMAN SUBSIDIARIES IN INDIA TO BENEFIT FROM CHANCELLOR ANGELA MARKEL’S VISIT TO INDIA” – RAJESH CHAWLA, DIRECTOR, VEKA INDIA

“German Subsidiaries In India To Benefit From Chancellor Angela Markel’s Visit To India” – Rajesh Chawla, Director, Veka India

Mumbai: Following the recent visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to India, VEKA India, a subsidiary of VEKA AG – the world’s second largest manufacturers of windows and doors systems has reiterated its plans to expand in India by introducing new products specific to the Indian market and by expanding its geographic footprint. The US 1.4 Billion company is one of the pioneers of uPVC door and windows systems in India and has recently completed ten years in India.

“The visit of the Chancellor is not only expected to boost trade ties between the two nations but is
Mr. Rajesh Chawla, Director
VEKA India
also expected to help German subsidiaries entrench their businesses in India. Both the leaders were very clear in their communication. While the Indian PM focussed on facilitating ease of
doing business in India, removing concerns of investors and driving growth through software, the German Chancellor focused on the fusion of India’s IT expertise and German Engineering. Ms. Merkel also welcomed the fast-track approval agreement signed on Monday. This will ensure that German companies have a single point of contact with the Indian government, and thus avoid the layers of bureaucracy,” says Mr. Rajesh Chawla, Director, VEKA India.

In line with the Indian Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ vision, VEKA India will also be looking at boosting its growth by manufacturing the systems domestically at its facility in India in the near future. Currently its 20,000 sq feet facility in Navi Mumbai has a sophisticated display center as well as German made state-of-the-art testing rig to test windows for water and air tightness and other performance criteria. “The exacting standards and precision engineering that Germany is world renowned for are adopted by us to create uPVC windows and door systems that are suitable for Indian conditions,” added Mr. Chawla. “When VEKA AG entered the Indian market in 2003, the uPVC door and windows market was very rudimentary. We have invested time and efforts in familiarizing the Indian market with the benefits of uPVC fenestration and are planning on rapid expansion from here on.”

Between India and Germany, there is good room for expansion despite an annual trade volume of 16 billion Euros and German businesses want to emphasize their contribution in the making of smart industries’ age.

The overall market size of PVC window profiles in India is about 40,000 tons in an annum. In Germany, VEKA by itself surpasses the figure in less than a month. Today, uPVC is the popular choice for windows and doors in all of Europe and America. Being rigid, durable and recyclable besides being cost-effective, this material is fast replacing the traditional wood or aluminium profiles across the world. With German technology on Indian turf, we intend to back the Make in India ideology with our commitment to quality offerings. With our latest range we hope to extend both choice and innovation to our customers and we are positive our profiles will be the future of window and door installations,” concludes Mr. Chawla.

UWDMA INTRODUCES QUALITY GUIDELINES FOR WINDOW & DOOR PROFILES

UWDMA Introduces Quality Guidelines For Window & Door Profiles

Mumbai: The uPVC Window and Doors Manufacturers Association (UWDMA) has recently drafted a set of Quality guidelines to create benchmark of technical specifications of uPVC Windows and Doors. The new guidelines have been set in order to give consumers a better understanding of the options available and help them make the best choice. For ease, convenience and accessibility, the association has also listed the guidelines online at www.uwdmaindia.org.

Currently the windows and doors profiles in India are dominated by aluminum and wood. World over, uPVC profile is the default choice. They not only provide greater durability, but also offer stunning looks and ultimate energy efficiency by entirely keeping out noise, dust, heat or cold. uPVC windows also are more cost effective than aluminum and wood when compared apple to apple. In the last few years, more and more projects in India have upgraded to uPVC windows and doors profiles and have become the fastest growing segment in the industry.

The draft will be shared among all stakeholders, directly and indirectly involved in the line of
business, across India. Some of the key points covered under the new guidelines will address all aspects of a given uPVC window and door profile. This includes Profiles Quality parameters, hardware tested for functionality, strength, operation & smoothness, usage of galvanised steel, processed glass only as per standards set by Federation of Safety Glass, Quality System Procedure or Quality documents to be verified of the manufacturer and installation.

“Lately, we have started witnessing some players, especially from the unorganized segment, compromise on the quality and safety to achieve better sales. It is our endeavour to protect the consumers’ interest by providing them with adequate information via setting down Quality guidelines that’ll help them make an informed decision,” says Mr. Rajesh Chawla, Vice-President, UWDMA.

UWDMA through Bureau of Indian Standards is also working on a standard for the Indian market based on the EN 12608 with certain parameters adapted to suit the Indian climatic conditions and test ability. The profiles, besides being required to conform to EN 12608:2003 are also required that their class be specified by the manufacturer clearly printed on the profile so that the customer can identify the brand or original manufacturer and the standard followed. A draft copy of the current UWDMA standards can be downloaded through the website http://www.uwdmaindia.org/

“uPVC as a material is not only used in window and door applications but also in piping, water storage, roofing membranes, electrical insulation among others. However, when it comes to the windows and doors industry because of non-adherence in standardization here unlike in the western countries, uPVC products may lose sheen. Since the uPVC windows and doors market is expected to grow in the years to come, we want to build a strong foundation so that the market does not get infiltrated with sub-standard products. If we cut corners at this juncture the windows and doors market may end up like the unorganized aluminium or wood products. The new benchmarks have been created with the objective of streamlining the industry and instilling trust in the minds of consumers. We are also aggressively driving membership in the association so that more and more stakeholders become part and voice of the booming uPVC windows and doors industry,” concludes Mr. Chawla.

About UWDMA: uPVC Window & Door Manufacturers Association, known as UWDMA is a non-profit body formed to create value proposition benefiting all from use of uPVC windows across India. Established in 2008, UWDMA is a non-governmental organization formed by industry leaders to promote and propagate uPVC windows and doors and its benefits to the Indian construction industry and general public at large.

“We recently completed ten successful years of operations in India and over the years there has been a marked rise in the uPVC windows and doors market. With uPVC the precision that can be achieved for window and door contours is unmatched with any other material. The welds at corners form monolithic joints for frames which are impossible to achieve with the traditional systems. A decade ago this vertical was not even considered an important aspect of design function. However today, construction which is detail driven, cannot afford to ignore this aspect,” says Mr. Rajesh Chawla, Director, VEKA India.

VEKA India has a strong network of partners in all of north, west and south India. The company operates a warehouse for its partners to easily and timely procure and supply profiles to customers.

“Since our inception in India, we’ve built an integrated team and a robust network of partners at VEKA India. We invested a significant amount of time in identifying potential markets and penetrating these markets with the right people on our side is a boon. Presently, we are best aligned with the Indian markets by factoring in all conditions that are endemic to India. This includes the weather, noise, cost, perceived value, reach and most importantly after sales service. With our latest range we hope to extend both choice and innovation to our customers and we are positive our profiles will be the future of window and door installations,” concludes Mr. Chawla.
