Rizvi Education Initiates India’s First Cent Percent Voter Registration Campaign

Rizvi Education Initiates
India’s First Cent Percent Voter Registration Campaign

Rizvi Education Society, a leading educational trust in the country, has launched India’s maiden ‘Cent Per Cent Voter Registration Campaign’. This initiative envisages the registration of each its students who fulfill the eligibility criteria in the electoral rolls of the country. Rizvi Education has over 18,000 students enrolled with its institutes. The pilot exercise targets achieving greater student participation in the electoral process of the world’s largest democracy.

“We recently submitted about 90% of the eligible forms to the Election Commission. A core committee comprising of students and faculty worked round the clock to make this happen,” says Mr. Abis Rizvi of Rizvi Education Society, who has conceived the campaign. “The initiative was launched with a two-fold aim. Firstly, we wanted all our students to be conscious of the electoral process and participate in it. Secondly, we want this to serve as a pilot project whereby other institutes can launch similar campaigns thereby ensuring that no youth in the campus is left out of the electoral process.”

The previous year, the college had run a voter awareness campaign titled, Largest Democracy Lowest Voting. Aimed at encouraging the youth to participate in big numbers in the BMC elections that were round the corner. The campaign ran for nine days and comprised of flash mobs, street plays, extempore debates and other activities that were conducted across the streets of Mumbai. “It was during this campaign that we realized many of the youth were not even registered to vote. Some were not registered because of complacency, but many were unregistered because of difficulties encountered during the registration process. This is when we decided to step in and facilitate and encourage the process,” explains Mr. Rizvi.

It has been observed that only 15-20 percent citizens in the age group of 18-19 are registered voters. And from among the registered voters below 21 years of age, very few actually turn up to vote. This is a major lacuna that needs immediate correction.

“We are now looking forward to this being treated as a pilot project by other institutes. Active participation of the youth is critical for India to be a vibrant and effective democracy,” concludes Mr. Rizvi.
The campaign is part of the extracurricular and social initiative campaign that the educational institutes falling under the trust indulges in from time to time.

Appeals To Government to Extend Relevant Timely Permissions
Hotel Industry Gears Up Early For Christmas & New Year

Following a lackluster Christmas and New Year Celebrations last year, the hotel industry has decided to gear up well in advance to ensure that 2012 is not repeated. The previous year, the industry was besieged by a variety of factors that included a slow economy, higher levies and delays in Government permissions. By internal estimates, the hotels and restaurants on an average fell short of targets by as much as forty five percent.

“Christmas & New Year Eve functions are held annually. Yet there is no blanket sanction till the eve of the event day. The permission is given last minute, sometimes as late as 5 p.m. Our humble request is that there should be a permanent permission, amendable in an emergency situation so that the licensed establishments on payment of fees, could market their events well in time,” submits Mr. D.S. Advani, President, Hotel & Restaurant Association Western India (HRAWI) in a petition to the Chief Secretary, Maharashtra.

The petition further requests that the changes of the above timings be introduced in uniformity in all the Commissionerate areas of Maharashtra and in commonality with the Prohibition & Excise Department. The two departments, although wings of the Home Department, do not issue similar timings for operations.

“Last year, due to an arbitrary increase in entertainment duty, many five star hotels and stand alone restaurants did not hold special functions for New Year. The ambiguous clause of ‘loud music’ was explained as the reason for this increase. Apparently, celebrations don’t go without the involvement of music and levying additional duty for the same discouraged hotels from hosting celebrations. This led to a loss of revenue not only for the hoteliers, but also for the State Government. Lackluster New Years impact the overall spirit of the occasion. With each passing year we are losing our patrons to states like Goa and Karnataka that have more liberal and reasonable policies in this regard. Corrective steps need to be undertaken on a priority basis, else very soon we will have a crisis in our hands,” says Mr. Gurbaxish Singh Kohli, Vice President, HRAWI.

The amendment to the Bombay Entertainment Duty Act, 1923 has been one of the biggest grouses of the industry. The entertainment duty on live performances or live orchestra conducted in the Permit Rooms, Beer Bars, Pubs and all such places where liquor is served, with the amendment became Rs.50,000/- per month for Permit Rooms and Beer Bars with live Orchestra; Rs.1.00 Lac per month for Pubs situated at a place other than the 5-Star Hotels; and, Rs.2.50 Lacs per month for Pubs in 5-Star Hotels.

“The Entertainment duty (pursuant to the amendments three years back), are not only exorbitant, unreasonable and without any basis, but instead of promoting local art form in terms of live serenade musicians, this duty has caused massive unemployment of live musicians who were creating the right ambiance while guests partook their meal. The duty is so highly prohibitive in nature that for an average outlet's normal monthly sale of Rs. 10-15 lakhs approximately, the entertainment duty itself works out to Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2.5 lakh per month. This leads to outlets shutting down the music amenity in their outlets and not only causes unemployment but neither creates any revenue for the State in the bargain,” says Mr. Kamlesh Barot, the immediate past President of HRAWI.

It may be noted that the Police Department is already charging Rs.15,000/- per month on live performances or orchestra in addition to Rs. 15,000/- per year to BMC by Permit Rooms, Beer Bars, Pubs etc.; Rs. 7,500/- per year to the Police Department as license charges; Rs. 1,80,000/- per year for Performance Licence; and Excise fees of Rs. 3,55,000/- per year.  The imposition of Entertainment Duty in addition to all these in effect amounts to double taxation of the same activity.

“If the Government does not step in, the New Year will be lackluster this year also. And this does not augur well for the industry in the State. Not only inbound tourists will give our State a miss, but residents from here will also go out to celebrate. We beseech the Government to adopt a rational policy,” concludes Mr. Barot.

Legendary singer and Padmashri awardee Mahendra Kapoor’s son and grandson have teamed up to create a line of successful tracks for the international market. Their music that featured in the award winning Spanish movie ‘Un Espejo En El Cielo’, which was directed by Oscar Nominee Icíar Bollaín, has found immense popularity both with critics and public.

Mahendra Kapoor’s son Ruhan Kapoor lent his voice and grandson Sidhant Kapoor composed the music for the tracks of the Spanish film. The musical hit has come as another feather in the cap for the 22-year-old Sidhant Kapoor who teamed up with his father to compose and sing for international films and television soon after he returned from London successfully completing his post-graduate studies in music composition from the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music (London).

We wish to keep the music legacy of our grandfather alive and take the tradition forward,” says Sidhant.  He had recently won the prestigious Daryl Runswick competition, which earned his composition a world premiere at the National Maritime Museum, London. His composition based on Ansel Adams' photography was praised by Michael Adams (son of Ansel Adams) and applauded by ace classical composers Dr. Deirdre Gribbin and Dr. Stephen Montague.

Sidhant’s legendary grandfather, Mahendra Kapoor was one of the singers who dominated the Golden Age of Hindi Film Music. In his career spanning five decades he sang over 25,000 songs that included Mere Desh Ki Dharti, Chalo Ek Baar and Neele Gagan Ke Tale. He also sang many hit songs for  Manoj Kumar & B.R. Films like Upkar, Purab aur Paschim, Shor, Kranti, Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Waqt, Hamraaz and Dhund besides the title song of Chopra’s popular TV Serial “Mahabharat” in the late 1980s.

Being born in a family traditionally rich in music, Sidhant had the privilege of learning music from his grandfather Mahendra Kapoor and was in turn inspired to chalk out his own journey in the realm of music. . He was trained by Pandit Murli Manohar Shukla and Jazz exponent Sir Xavier Fernandes. He started composing music at an early age for companies in the UK and in USA. His music was well-received by the BBC, Discovery channel, Animal Planet and others of the ilk. He has also worked with Netherland films, New Zealand films, Norwegian films, Australian films and Polish films.
During his post-graduate studies Sidhant worked on incorporating Hindustani musical elements in his compositions for western instruments, and in his experimental works he wrote graphic scores which can be adapted to the raga chosen by the performer.
His winning composition based on Ansel Adams' photography was praised by Michael Adams (son of Ansel Adams). Among his projects at Trinity Laban was an opera based on an Indian mythological story - Birth of Ganesha, which was extolled by prominent classical composers Dr. Deirdre Gribbin and Dr. Stephen Montague.

YET ANOTHER CULTURAL ICON OF MUMBAI TO CELEBRATE SILVER JUBILEE - GOA PORTUGUESA TO MARK THE OCCASION BY GOING PAN INDIA; OPENING FRANCHISE IN MIDDLE EAST

Yet Another Cultural Icon Of Mumbai To Celebrate Silver Jubilee
GOA PORTUGUESA TO MARK THE OCCASION BY GOING PAN INDIA; OPENING FRANCHISE IN MIDDLE EAST

Mumbai, Nov 27: A cultural icon, and one of Mumbai’s best known Goan Restobars, Goa Portuguesa will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary on December 3. The occasion will be marked by a grand celebration and announcement of their plans to go national by opening a chain of restaurants across India and franchises in Middle East nations. The occasion is preceded by the launch of Goa Portuguesa in Chennai last week.

Conceived by the multi-talented couple Dr. Suhas Awchat, MD and his Goan wife Master Chef Deepa Awchat in 1988, the restaurant soon blazed into the cultural limelight, becoming a hub for the city’s glitterati and food connoisseurs. The group thereafter opened two other brands, Culture Curry and Diva Maharashtracha and spread across the city by opening eight more outlets.

“Silver jubilee is a big milestone for any restaurant. Along with the celebrations, the occasion will also mark significant operational transformations. From being a group of restaurants, we will now become a chain with franchisee units across India,” announced Dr. Awchat.

The event will also be highlighted with the second generation of the Awchat family taking on a more active role in the running of the restaurant. Armed with formal training in Hotel Management and an MBA degree, Sudeep Awchat plans to take the brand forward by embarking a massive expansion plan. The company intends to franchise Goa Portuguesa pan India and in the Middle East. “We are looking at opening 11 more restaurants in the coming calendar year and twenty-five over the course of next two years,” says Sudeep Awchat.

The masalas and recipes are standardised by Master Chef Deepa Awchat. The ambience will also be similar across restaurants. Patrons across the world will be able to enjoy a uniform experience that has been the hall mark of Goa Portuguesa.

Goa Portuguesa, Mumbai’s first and only authentic Goan Restobar, serves a blend of Goan Hindu/Catholic and Portuguese delicacies. Set in a traditional Goan bungalow like ambience with colorful stained glass depicting Mario Miranda’s caricatures, the restaurant serves more than 100 vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. “There exists a myth that Goan dishes are all about Vindaloo and Balchao. While these are the highlights of Goan cuisine, the region also is known for a variety of traditional Hindu vegetarian preparations,” discloses Master Chef Deepa Awchat.

“My parents conceptualized the concept out of their love for Goan Food and their passion to be with people. Both my parents belonged to different professions. My dad who was a doctor and mother a Senior Customs Intelligence Officer left everything in order to pursue their passion. They built the brand Goa Portuguesa step-by-step without knowing how brands are made. It was natural for me to be interested in the space created by them, as this was the only thing I saw them breathe day in and day out. After completing my college and securing experience at the Taj Hotel, Resorts and Palaces, I joined my parents in 2010 with the specific agenda of taking this Goa Portuguesa brand to a new height of success,” concludes Sudeep Awchat, the young Executive Director of the company.

Advertising is the Wind. PR is the Sun.

By -

Al Reis & Laura Reis (The Fall Of Advertising & The Rise of PR)

In one of Aesop’s fables, the wind and the sun had a dispute over who was the stronger of the two.

Seeing a traveler walking down the road, they decided to settle the issue by trying to make the traveler take off his coat. The wind went first, but the harder the wind blew, the more closely the traveler wrapped his coat around him.

Then the sun came out and began to shine. Soon the traveler felt the sun’s warmth and took off his coat. The sun had won.
You can’t force your way into the prospect’s mind. Advertising is perceived as an imposition, an unwelcome intruder that needs to be resisted. The harder the sell, the harder the wind blows, the harder the prospect resists the sales message.
Advertising people talk about impact. Spreads, inserts, foldouts, and full color in print ads. Frenetic actions, crazy angles, and jump cuts in television commercials. Turning up the volume in radio spots. But these are exactly the attributes that say to the prospect, don’t pay any attention to me, I’m an advertisement.
The harder an advertisement tries to force its way into the mind, the less likely it will accomplish its objective. Once in a while a prospect drops his or her guard and the wind will win. But not very often.
PR is the sun. You can’t force the media to run your message. It’s entirely in their hands. All you can do is make sure your publicity material is as helpful as possible.
Nor does the prospect perceive any force in an editorial message. It’s the opposite. Prospects think that media are trying to be helpful by alerting them to a wonderful new product or service.
