Mumbai, Nov 27: A cultural icon, and one of Mumbai’s best known Goan Restobars, Goa Portuguesa will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary on December 3. The occasion will be marked by a grand celebration and announcement of their plans to go national by opening a chain of restaurants across India and franchises in Middle East nations. The occasion is preceded by the launch of Goa Portuguesa in Chennai last week.

Conceived by the multi-talented couple Dr. Suhas Awchat, MD and his Goan wife Master Chef Deepa Awchat in 1988, the restaurant soon blazed into the cultural limelight, becoming a hub for the city’s glitterati and food connoisseurs. The group thereafter opened two other brands, Culture Curry and Diva Maharashtracha and spread across the city by opening eight more outlets.

“Silver jubilee is a big milestone for any restaurant. Along with the celebrations, the occasion will also mark significant operational transformations. From being a group of restaurants, we will now become a chain with franchisee units across India,” announced Dr. Awchat.

The event will also be highlighted with the second generation of the Awchat family taking on a more active role in the running of the restaurant. Armed with formal training in Hotel Management and an MBA degree, Sudeep Awchat plans to take the brand forward by embarking a massive expansion plan. The company intends to franchise Goa Portuguesa pan India and in the Middle East. “We are looking at opening 11 more restaurants in the coming calendar year and twenty-five over the course of next two years,” says Sudeep Awchat.

The masalas and recipes are standardised by Master Chef Deepa Awchat. The ambience will also be similar across restaurants. Patrons across the world will be able to enjoy a uniform experience that has been the hall mark of Goa Portuguesa.

Goa Portuguesa, Mumbai’s first and only authentic Goan Restobar, serves a blend of Goan Hindu/Catholic and Portuguese delicacies. Set in a traditional Goan bungalow like ambience with colorful stained glass depicting Mario Miranda’s caricatures, the restaurant serves more than 100 vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. “There exists a myth that Goan dishes are all about Vindaloo and Balchao. While these are the highlights of Goan cuisine, the region also is known for a variety of traditional Hindu vegetarian preparations,” discloses Master Chef Deepa Awchat.

“My parents conceptualized the concept out of their love for Goan Food and their passion to be with people. Both my parents belonged to different professions. My dad who was a doctor and mother a Senior Customs Intelligence Officer left everything in order to pursue their passion. They built the brand Goa Portuguesa step-by-step without knowing how brands are made. It was natural for me to be interested in the space created by them, as this was the only thing I saw them breathe day in and day out. After completing my college and securing experience at the Taj Hotel, Resorts and Palaces, I joined my parents in 2010 with the specific agenda of taking this Goa Portuguesa brand to a new height of success,” concludes Sudeep Awchat, the young Executive Director of the company.
